Grand Lycée Franco-Libanais
IGA role: Full landscape design
Location: Beirut, Lebanon
The benefits of green spaces on productivity and the well-being of humans, psychological as much as physical is no longer a matter of scientific challenges.
Hence, the importance of redesigning the outdoor spaces which go along with the new architectural extension of the Grand Lycée.
The proposed approach is based on a thorough analysis of the site, the constraints and the new needs with the aim of optimizing the spaces in a visually harmonious and attractive way.
The goal is to achieve a harmony with the forms, choice of materials, surrounding vegetation while personalizing the playgrounds and the outdoor spaces in order to create a sense of identification and belonging through a distinguished punctual treatment, some specimen trees and colorful urban furniture.
Therefore a multilayered design has been proposed:
- The first layer recreated the existing platform that covers the whole site and in which the different architectural buildings will be placed. Sharing a common language, easy accessibility and subtle circulation between the interior and the exterior will be at the core of the design.
- The second layer will be composed of a vegetated surface surrounding the buildings and the playgrounds and infiltrating wherever possible.
- Finally, the playgrounds of the different sections shaped like islands or oases between the buildings will distinguish themselves with the colorful ribbons and will be characterized by their dynamic shape reflecting the playful spirit during the breaks in contrast with the rigid shape of the buildings and the strict nature of the classrooms.
